Acupuncture for relief of menopausal symptoms

Menopause is a natural stage in all women's lives, with symptoms beginning usually when they're in their 40's.  Symptoms vary greatly from person to person, and there are over 36 symptoms that can be attributed to menopause.  Perimenopause is the phase before menopause and it can last from 2-6 years, and menopause is official when there has been no menstrual period for 12 consecutive months.

In some cultures where they practice healthy eating, take herbs, do acupuncture and appropriate exercise, there are very few symptoms of menopause experienced by women.  It is a time where women are respected, looked upon as wise, and it becomes an empowering stage in their lives.  A more positive experience than what we often hear about!

Symptoms occur when there is an imbalance of hormones, and this can be caused by the following:

Stress and emotions causing high cortisol

Diet and lifestyle

Environment - chemicals, cosmetics, foods

Medications including the contraceptive pill

Genetics and ageing

Ideally, when approaching this stage of life, prevention is better than cure.  It's important to consider ways in which you can navigate these symptoms with support in order to relieve or minimise the effect they  have on your life.

Acupuncture can help alleviate menopausal symptoms in several ways:

  1. Regulating hormones such as oestrogen and progesterone

  2. Reducing hot flushes and night sweats

  3. Improve sleep quality which helps with insomnia and fatigue

  4. Helps to manage mood swings, reducing anxiety, depression, irritability

  5. Pain relief as women may experience joint pain, headaches, and muscle tension

  6. Improving cognitive function including memory and concentration

  7. Overall well-being by helping the body and mind to relax and rejuvenate

The effectiveness of acupuncture varies from person to person.  When acupuncture is combined with Bach Flower remedies, dietary and lifestyle advice, and western medication where necessary, Catherine finds women experience great relief and begin to feel more like themselves.  Try it and see!
